1-3/4 cups each flour and granulated sugar
1-1/4 tsp. baking soda
1-1/4 cups water
1 tsp. vanilla
3 eggs
1/4 cup butter
3-1/2 cups icing sugar
1/2 cup milk
1 tsp. vanilla

Step 1
Heat oven to 350ºF.
Step 1
Grease and flour 2 (9-inch) round pans. Beat all cake ingredients except eggs in large bowl with mixer 2 min. or until well blended. Add eggs; beat 2 min. Pour into prepared pans.
Step 2
Bake 35 to 40 min. or until toothpick inserted in centres comes out clean. Cool cakes 10 min. Remove from pans to wire racks; cool completely. Meanwhile, prepare Frosting.

Microwave chocolate and butter in large microwaveable bowl on MEDIUM 1 to 2 min. or until butter is melted, stirring after 1 min. Stir until chocolate is completely melted. Cool. Add remaining ingredients; beat with mixer 2 to 3 min. or until frosting is shiny and smooth. Refrigerate until ready to use.
Step 2
Let frosting stand at room temperature 30 min. before using to fill and frost stacked cake layers.

Special Extra
Garnish with chocolate curls made from additional chocolate squares. Warm 1 oz. chocolate by microwaving it on HIGH for a few seconds or just until you can smudge the chocolate with your thumb. Hold the chocolate piece steadily, then draw a vegetable peeler slowly over the flat bottom of the chocolate piece, allowing a thin layer of chocolate to curl as it is peeled off the bottom to make long, delicate curls. Repeat with remaining chocolate piece.
